Terra Wineman, HTL (ASCP), Research Biologist

Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining has been utilized as a diagnostic tool for many years in both the human and animal clinical worlds. The H&E stain remains the primary technique for the assessment of pathological changes within tissue specimens. However the staining world of histology is not limited to this routine stain. The set of tissue stains a histologist calls “special stains” includes techniques that highlight or reveal carbohydrates, amyloid, connective, muscle, and nerve tissue as well as microorganisms, pigments, minerals, and granules. This presentation will review specific stains for each category including the purpose, principle, best fixative, and the results.
